Grama Sabha

1. What is a Grama Sabha?

A Grama Sabha is a general body consisting of the voters of each ward of a Grama Panchayat. It is an important platform for ensuring the direct participation of people in local governance and development activities, where their needs, concerns, and suggestions can be discussed.

2. Main Responsibilities of the Grama Sabha

• Discuss the needs and problems of the people in the area.
• Provide suggestions for development projects.
• Participate in identifying beneficiaries for various welfare schemes.
• Review the plans and activities of the Panchayat.
• Assess the progress of development activities being implemented.
• Provide suggestions regarding basic facilities required by the people.
• Discuss matters related to social welfare, healthcare, education, sanitation, and other local needs.

3. Meetings of the Grama Sabha

Grama Sabha meetings are conducted at regular intervals in the respective wards. The date, time, and venue of the meeting are informed to the public in advance. People can present their problems, suggestions, and opinions during the meeting. The discussions, decisions, and recommendations are properly recorded.

4. Participants in the Grama Sabha

• Citizens included in the electoral roll of the respective ward.
• The Ward Member.
• Panchayat President, Vice President, and other elected representatives, as required.
• Panchayat officials and concerned implementing officers.
• Officials from various departments, whenever necessary.

5. Decisions of the Grama Sabha and Development Activities

The needs and suggestions raised by the people in the Grama Sabha are considered while identifying priorities for Panchayat development programmes. Recommendations can be made regarding roads, drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, education, social welfare, agriculture, and other local development needs. These recommendations help in incorporating people’s priorities into relevant development projects.
